BUILDING THE CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY

The race is on to become the first country in the world to build a comprehensive clean energy economy. The United States must act now to achieve economic and technological leadership in the global energy race, implementing forward-thinking policies to encourage adoption of renewable and clean resources that will create jobs in manufacturing, engineering, construction and clean energy services here at home.

Voces Verdes continues its efforts to encourage policies at the federal and state level that will achieve the most efficient and cost-effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which cause global climate change. Such policies are essential to spur technological and business innovation, and create opportunities for Latinos to play an integral role in this emerging clean energy economy.

DEFENDING THE CLEAN AIR ACT

The Clean Air Act, a landmark law that has protected our health and the very air we breathe for 40 years, is under attack. Some in Congress, backed by the nation’s largest corporate polluters, have set their sights on crippling protections and blocking vital air pollution standards that would save thousands of lives. Congress must allow the EPA to do its job of protecting our health and families by improving standards to address mercury, arsenic, carbon dioxide and other life-threatening pollution in our air.

Across the country, millions of Americans suffer the health impacts of air pollution, from asthma to lung cancer to chronic bronchitis. For the Hispanic population the burden is greater; where many are under-insured or lack insurance altogether, these preventable illnesses can be devastating.

In the U.S. today, one out of every 10 children are affected by asthma. Latino children have an even worse fate, being 60% more likely to develop asthma than non-Hispanic white children since they often live in geographic areas with the highest concentrations of air pollution.

Voces Verdes is working closely with health professionals, business groups and other community leaders to defend the health of our children and families from dangerous air pollution. Our coalition is active in Washington, D.C., meeting with key representatives of Congress to underscore that protecting our clean air is the priority not only of Latinos, but of all communities. Add your voice to the campaign.
